Hot Potato: Design and Theme
🖼️ Graphics
The backdrop is a city block with awnings and a yellow cab, as if we’re parked by a Manhattan snack bar. The board sits neatly inset, while the icons have a buttery sheen: a grinning chef, glossy doughnuts, burgers and soda cans. When the potato wild explodes, sparks wipe a 3x3 area and leave a glowing multiplier grid; in the bonus, those tiles pulse in violet and orange. The art is meticulously polished, and the win animations are mesmerising — Thunderkick’s reliably slick visual standard.
🎶 Sound
The audio is just as polished as the visuals. In the base game, a laid-back hip-hop loop ticks along without wearing thin. As soon as the bonus round begins, the hip hop beats fade away and the melody changes to a lively and cheerful tune, as if someone had turned on the music in the kitchen to make cooking more fun. The transitions are smooth, the effects are energetic, and nothing is annoying — classic Thunderkick quality control.

The key feature of this slot is the Multiplier Grid, which appears after the Wild Potato explodes. Each cell starts at x2; new wild blasts on top of existing cells double them up to x128. If a winning cluster covers several cells, their values add together (e.g., x2 + x32 = x34) and multiply the cluster payout.

Special symbols
- Wild (angry potato): Can land and explode during the spin or during a cascade; it may also be auto-generated inside a winning cluster area. The blast clears a 3×3 zone and spawns a Multiplier Grid. Substitutes for all except the scatter. Does not pay on its own.
- Scatter: Three anywhere trigger free spins; no standalone payout.
Bonus game
- Trigger/retrigger: 3 scatters anywhere = 10 free spins; 3 more scatters in the feature = +10 FS.
- Multiplier behaviour: grids created in the base game reset on entry; in the bonus, new grids are sticky until the feature ends.
- Rules: played at the triggering bet; you can’t change the stake mid-round.
RTP, Volatility and Maximum Win
The rules state RTP 96.16% for standard play. Volatility is very high. The maximum win is x10,000 total bet; if this cap is reached, the round ends immediately.
Our verdict
Hot Potato is an honest arcade fun from Thunderkick: a simple cluster idea that’s lifted by the exploding wild and the additive Multiplier Grid. When grids start stacking, the game pops like bubble wrap — any cascade can suddenly snowball. Getting there can be dry without the bonus, though. The free spins with sticky grids are the sweet spot and worth chasing, even if the trigger takes its time. If you like straightforward rules and the potential that comes from where a win lands, this fits nicely.
