Design and Theme
🖼️ Graphics
In the base game, “Sword of Shoguns” is built around a soft sunset backdrop: pagodas along the sides, red maple trees, distant mountains, and subtle lighting that does not compete with the reels. Everything looks composed and tranquil.
In the bonus, the palette shifts slightly — the lighting becomes brighter, contrast increases, and emphasis moves towards the winning cells. Visually, you can feel that the mode has changed, but without abrupt transitions.
🎶 Sound
The soundtrack is built on a calm, monotonous motif: drawn-out notes, light strings, and barely audible percussive hits create a sense of measured pacing. In the background, muted male voices seem to slip through — not speech, but rather ritualistic intonations that subtly blend into the atmosphere. During wins, the melody briefly flares up — short, bright transitions highlight the moment without breaking the overall slow rhythm.

Special Symbols
Understanding how to play Sword of Shoguns is quite straightforward: the slot is built around just two key elements:
- Wild and Scatter (silver blade): triggers the bonus game and substitutes for any symbols in both the base game and the bonus, but does not participate in wins with expanding symbols.
- Expanding Symbol (randomly selected): one of the regular symbols that, during the bonus, can expand to cover an entire reel if this creates a win. It does not need to land adjacent to matching symbols and can expand once per reel per spin. Up to four such expanding symbols can be unlocked during a single bonus round.
Bonus Game
- The bonus is triggered by landing 3 swords anywhere on the grid. The game awards a random number of free spins: 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, or 12.
- Within the round, one random symbol is selected to become the expanding symbol.
- The reel configuration is locked as it appears in the triggering spin and does not change until the end of the bonus.
- Additional swords retrigger the bonus: +3, +4, +5, +6, or +7 free spins for 3–7 swords respectively.
- Once all four expanding symbols have been activated, the sword no longer appears during the bonus.
RTP, Volatility, Maximum Win
The RTP is 96.15%. Volatility is very high. The maximum win is capped at x25,200 of the stake.
Our Verdict
Sword of Shoguns does not overwhelm with effects or try to dazzle — it unfolds gradually. In the demo, you can clearly feel how the bonus changes the game step by step: one expanding symbol, then a second, a third… and the grid begins to behave differently, without sharp spikes or unnecessary chaos.
The slot will appeal to players who prefer clear logic and steady gameplay, where power builds progressively rather than through sudden bursts. If you want a similar approach with a different focus, Cyber Wolf is worth a try — there, any symbol can turn into a wild during the bonus. And if you are interested in the closest possible expanding-symbol mechanic, Book of Dead is the most logical reference point.
