During the international break Wolverhampton Wanderers finally found a replacement for the sacked Vítor Pereira. And it is not just any replacement, but their own Rob Edwards, who played exactly 100 matches for the club.
Edwards has decided to leave Middlesbrough, whom he made successful at the start of the EFL Championship season. He left them in second place, and for five rounds the team even led the standings. That looks good on his CV, but Wolverhampton Wanderers really are in crisis. Their squad is only strong enough for about 16th place, so they are still likely to be in a relegation battle. Under the new coach, Wolverhampton Wanderers have not yet played an official match, but there are already active rumours about their first winter transfer. As a replacement for Matheus Cunha they have identified in Ecuador a 22-year-old central midfielder, Patrik Mercado. Seven goals scored is a very modest return by current standards; at least six of them have been scored at Molineux Stadium.
Crystal Palace are not the kind of opponents you would want in your first match. Over 11 rounds of the Premier League they have lost only twice, plus once in the Conference League. Scoring against them is also difficult, because in goal is Dean Henderson, who has prevented a further 3.8 goals in the league according to the statistics. Even so, only two leaders, Manchester City (eight) and Arsenal (five), have conceded fewer than his nine. So should we instead look towards the under bet? Against a team that are conceding 2.3 goals per match? Crystal Palace have had four under 2.5 goals results in eight away fixtures, but they did beat a side of a similar level, West Ham United (2:1).
Rob Edwards’ strong desire to lift Wolverhampton Wanderers up the standings should be transmitted to the players. They may have less individual quality, but they will fight until the end. Even a draw is not guaranteed, because the errors in defence will not disappear immediately. There should be goals scored against them, which means that alongside the over 2.5 goals it is worth backing the double chance on Crystal Palace.
