Adam Williams presents his prediction for the Kempton 2m Ladbrokes Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) (4yo+) horse racing event.
Lump Sum made a superb start to his chasing career, winning a Beginners’ Chase by 16 lengths when sent off favourite. He then finished third in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase (Grade 1), broadly in line with market expectations. Once again, he is expected by the public to deliver a victory.
Four year old Mambonumberfive has also enjoyed an excellent start over fences. He has won two handicap chases and, given that he previously landed the Adonis Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2), this step up in class should not intimidate him.
Mirabad began the season with a change of trainer and an eighth place finish in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, before switching to fences. He picked up a Beginners’ Chase win at Exeter, where he got the better of the favourite mare Joyeuse.
Hansard did not start the campaign well, finishing fourth and last in a Beginners’ Chase here at Kempton. He then made amends with a comfortable win in suitable company at Lingfield, albeit against just two rivals. This contest looks a much sterner test.
Alnilam won his first two starts over fences. He then lined up in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, but a mistake saw him drop to the rear and he was pulled up. He remains an interesting prospect and is our selection here.
