Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
Before the final round of the qualifying stage, Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina find themselves in an interesting position. Both sides are guaranteed to remain in the top two at the end of the qualification, but the two-point gap between them adds extra intrigue to this head-to-head meeting.
Austria
In the current campaign, Austria have looked extremely convincing: their only setback came away to Romania (0:1) a month ago. On Saturday, away to Cyprus (2:0), they dominated possession. Marko Arnautović scored twice by the start of the second half, and the margin of 2.51-0.36 in xG underlined the strength of the favourites. Across seven qualification matches, they have scored 21 goals; the closest rival in Group H have five fewer.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
It is Bosnia and Herzegovina who possess the second-best attack in Group H (16 goals in seven matches). At the weekend against Romania (3:1), the visitors achieved their objective: the opponents were reduced to ten men midway through the second half and were punished for it (1.79-1.50 in xG). They are already assured of at least second place, so they are likely to push forward in Vienna, as they still have a chance of direct qualification to the final stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.
Austria vs Bosnia and Herzegovina Prediction
Two months ago, Austria beat Bosnia and Herzegovina away in a tight encounter (2:1). We can again expect an intense and competitive match on Tuesday: both sides have attacking potential and strong motivation to win. Given their scoring statistics in qualification and the stakes of this head-to-head, we believe the match is well suited to an over 2.5 goals prediction.
