Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Portuguese Primeira Liga match.
Benfica have started the new season superbly and are yet to drop a point in the league. This is an important stretch for them — the squad must keep pace with Porto and Sporting CP, who are also chasing the title. Santa Clara are in a relegation battle and understand that points against the leading clubs are more of a bonus than an expectation.
Benfica
Benfica look assured — three wins with an aggregate score of 6:1. They first beat Estrela (1:0), then routed Tondela (3:0) and followed up with a narrow win against Alverca (2:1). It was in the latter game that Benfica conceded their only goal across the three matches, and by then the side were down to ten men. The attack is in good order — six goals scored by six different players, including Vangelis Pavlidis (19 goals last season). Against Santa Clara, Benfica are comfortable at home: three wins in a row, each by a three-goal margin.
Santa Clara
Santa Clara have taken four points from three matches but are yet to face the top sides. Finishing has been poor — across those three fixtures the team has scored only once despite generating 3.73 xG. Away from home, Santa Clara typically sit deep, yet in six of their last ten matches against the leading clubs they have conceded at least twice. Against Benfica, defensive solidity has also been absent — no clean sheets in 14 meetings, and in 12 of those they have conceded a minimum of two.
Benfica vs Santa Clara Prediction
The favourite here is clear. Benfica play with authority at home, usually score more than once, and are motivated to keep pace with the leaders in the standings. Santa Clara can organise a compact defence, but over 90 minutes they are unlikely to live with the tempo. We expect a comfortable win by at least two goals.
