In the past, meetings between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen were clashes between contenders for the top four. In the current campaign there is a real chance that even Bayer Leverkusen will miss out on European competition: both sides are struggling for results, but this applies above all to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Borussia Mönchengladbach
Since mid-January, Borussia Mönchengladbach have been dragged back into the relegation battle. The squad have taken only two points from a possible 12 in their last four league rounds, and their gap to the relegation play-off zone has been reduced to three points. The hosts have conceded 33 goals in 20 matches – among the top 15 only three clubs have a worse defence. They have collected only nine points from 10 home games, which is the joint-worst record along with four other teams.
Bayer Leverkusen
By contrast, Bayer Leverkusen have been quite successful away from home, with 16 points from nine away matches (only three clubs have more). The visitors have hit strong form, with four wins since 24 January, including 3:0 victories over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League and St. Pauli in the DFB-Pokal (both by 3:0). They badly need points: the gap to the top four remains at four points, although they do have a game in hand against a solid Hamburger side.
