Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Bristol City sit seventh and play at home, while Southampton are down in 15th and travel to Ashton Gate.
Bristol City
Twice already this autumn, Bristol City have lost home games where they were favourites — against Oxford United (1:3) and Queens Park Rangers (1:2). There was also a draw with a strong Ipswich Town side (1:1), before last week’s narrow 1:0 away win over Norwich City. The common thread through these fixtures is the lack of goals: just one per game on average across the last five rounds.
Southampton
Southampton boast the second most expensive squad in the division, yet they are underperforming badly, languishing in the bottom half and only five points clear of the relegation zone. Still, under young manager Will Still, signs of improvement are evident — they are unbeaten in four matches (one win, three draws), and three of those games have gone under 2.5 goals.
Bristol City vs Southampton Prediction
The sides are fairly well matched in potential, and both could push for a play-off spot later in the season. However, with Bristol City’s low-scoring trend and Southampton’s recent defensive solidity, a low-key encounter looks most likely. The best bet appears to be under 2.5 goals.
