Mid-table sides Freiburg and Hamburger are separated by only three teams in the standings, but will the latter side be strong enough to aim for more than just a draw?
Freiburg
In the final months of 2025, Freiburg have been pursuing two tasks in parallel: staying high in the Bundesliga and performing well in the UEFA Europa League so as to avoid an unnecessary play-off round later on. Overall, they are coping with both: in the Bundesliga they are ninth, six points off the European places, and in Europe the team is among the top five sides in the league phase overall. They are certain to feature in at least one knockout round.
Their home form is also stable. In the UEFA Europa League they have three wins from three at home, and in Germany they have suffered only one defeat in seven home matches.
Hamburger
Hamburger are also staying afloat in their first season back in the Bundesliga, largely thanks to their matches at the Volksparkstadion. In the home standings they are even above Freiburg, with 14 points from eight games.
In the final round before the break, Hamburger drew 1:1 with Eintracht Frankfurt. However, for the hosts, this side is a favourable opponent: they remain the only team yet to win away from home, with just two draws from seven away matches.
Freiburg vs Hamburger Prediction
Freiburg should therefore maintain their status as an almost invulnerable side at the Europa-Park Stadion. It would be a surprise if the match even ended in a draw. Even though this is only a friendly, in pre-season the hosts thrashed Hamburger 5:1.
