Adam Williams presents his prediction for the UK Championship Snooker match.
This is a classic top-level meeting between two legends, who in 2025 are maintaining a high level and have already won two titles each.
John Higgins
John Higgins is once again getting close to his best form: late stages of tournaments in recent months, confident safety/positional play and a minimum of errors. In his opening match in York he comfortably dealt with Ben Woollaston, winning 6:2 and at one stage leading 5:0. He produced five 50+ breaks and at the same time the Scotsman did not allow his opponent to get into any rhythm. Higgins is traditionally strong in matches against Shaun Murphy: 16 wins in 28 meetings and a convincing 6:2 victory at the International Championship in November. His current game is all about reliability, control and pressure through a steady sequence of short breaks.
Shaun Murphy
Shaun Murphy had an excellent September and October, but then slowed down. At the UK Championship he started confidently, beating Lyu Haotian (6:2) and making four 50+ breaks. But Haotian was very poor in his shot-making (45% pot success), and Murphy took advantage of that. For now, he does not have the level of stability that is critical against John Higgins: he has attacking flair and is willing to take risks, but he lacks balance and the ability to minimise errors. And it is precisely this aspect that most often lets him down against Higgins.
John Higgins vs Shaun Murphy Prediction
Shaun Murphy is capable of imposing an attacking game, but over the longer distance John Higgins more often outplays him through control and reliability. Higgins’s form is more stable, and their recent match in November (6:2) is a direct reference point. In a match-up between two players of this stature, he looks like the player who is less likely to falter at key moments.
