Mainz 05 are currently bottom of the Bundesliga, but Borussia Mönchengladbach were in that position themselves as recently as late October, so we cannot say that the hosts have no chance of success. According to the bookmakers' odds, they are even slight favourites despite their position in the standings.

Mainz 05 dropped to last place only after matchday 12, when they themselves lost 0:4 to Freiburg and Heidenheim 1846 beat their opponent. To climb off the bottom it would be enough to win twice, but the team have only one victory this season, way back on matchday four away to Augsburg (4:1). That win came away from home, while Mainz are still unable to get a home victory. The only positive sign is a small step forward: they have at least managed two draws in a row.
Borussia Mönchengladbach
Borussia Mönchengladbach did not win at all until matchday nine, but their results improved sharply after that. By that point the coach had already been changed: Gerardo Seoane was replaced by Eugen Polanski, who, while still in an interim role, led the team to three wins in a row with a combined score of 10:1, after which he was confirmed as permanent head coach. In his new status he was stopped by one of the Bundesliga leaders, RB Leipzig, in a 0:0 draw.

On their way, Borussia Mönchengladbach have confidently dealt with two other outsiders, St. Pauli (4:0) and Heidenheim 1846 (3:0), so Mainz 05 are likely to face the same fate. In any case, the main problem for them is that they have scored few goals since the start of the season. Whatever the competition, Mainz have scored more than once in only 6 of 20 matches, so regardless of the result the best option looks to be backing them under 1.5 goals on the team total.
