Adam Williams presents his prediction for the UK Championship Snooker match.
A Round of 16 match at the UK Championship. Mark Selby, after a confident start, looks like one of the outside favourites for the tournament, while Zhou Yuelong is riding the momentum of a high-profile win over Ronnie O'Sullivan. The question is whether he will have enough consistency after a tough match against O'Sullivan.
Mark Selby
Mark Selby recorded a convincing win over Lei Peifan (6:2), compiling three 50+ breaks including a 133 century break. It is clear that after his victory at the Champion of Champions he has found his rhythm: only two defeats in his last 10 matches and a high conversion rate. His style is steady and high-tempo with a minimum of errors – something that opponents without elite safety play usually cannot cope with.
Zhou Yuelong
Zhou Yuelong has eight wins in his last 10 matches, but his performance against Ronnie O'Sullivan was inconsistent: only one century break (125) and no long scoring runs in the other frames (he failed to reach 50+ in any of the remaining frames). The win over O'Sullivan was largely the result of his opponent's mistakes rather than his dominance. The historical head-to-head advantage (5:2) is more of a psychological factor than a real edge given their current form.
Mark Selby vs Zhou Yuelong Prediction
Zhou Yuelong has just come through an emotionally and physically draining match in which O'Sullivan effectively gifted him several frames. Mark Selby is organised, stable and converting his chances at a high rate. At the same time, Zhou rarely produces century breaks against top-level opponents, and Selby's style does not allow opponents to open up freely in attack. In this form, the veteran is capable of narrowing the head-to-head record and getting his revenge.
