Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
The Netherlands host Lithuania in the final round of Group G. The home side need only a point to secure direct qualification for the World Cup, while the visitors remain bottom without a single win.
Netherlands
The Dutch are moving steadily towards their target, though without much sparkle: a draw with Poland (1:1) and laboured wins over Lithuania (3:2) and Finland (2:0). They top the group with 17 points and a goal difference of 23:4. With qualification almost secured, Ronald Koeman may rotate and give opportunities to squad players such as Donyell Malen and Noa Lang. In the reverse fixture the Netherlands were careless, allowing Lithuania to level from 2:0, although the difference in quality eventually told. There is no need for a big win here — a modest margin will fully suit the leaders.
Lithuania
Lithuania have endured a poor campaign: three draws, four defeats and no victories, leaving them bottom on three points. They did give the Dutch a competitive game earlier in the group (2:3), but overall their attacking output has been low with only six goals scored. Their defence has conceded 11, yet they have not lost by more than two goals at any point, including a respectable 0:2 against Poland.
Netherlands vs Lithuania Prediction
The Netherlands should take the win, but with minimal urgency and likely rotation, a heavy scoreline looks unlikely. Lithuania have fought stubbornly throughout the qualifiers and should avoid a major defeat even against the group leaders.
