Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
After two group-stage rounds, Benfica are among just four teams yet to collect a single point — a disastrous start, and things could get even worse with a daunting trip to England, where taking anything from St. James’ Park looks an uphill battle.
Newcastle United
Following the loss of Alexander Isak, Newcastle United initially struggled to find their rhythm. However, the arrival of German forward Nick Woltemade has transformed their attack. With five goals in his last six appearances for club and country, he’s proving every bit worth his £85 million price tag. With him leading the line, Newcastle United have won three of their last five matches, losing narrowly to Arsenal and Brighton — both 1:2.
Benfica
Under José Mourinho, Benfica are far from their best. The main issue lies in attack: their creativity has completely dried up. Against Porto (0:0), they managed a paltry 0.12 xG, and versus Chelsea (0:1) — just 0.85. The signing of Dodi Lukébakio has raised eyebrows too, as the Belgian winger has only one assist in four starts.
Newcastle United vs Benfica Prediction
Benfica are in deep crisis, and there’s no sign of an imminent turnaround. They’re likely to sit deep and focus on defence in England, but keeping Newcastle at bay at St. James’ Park is a huge ask. Benfica will struggle to cope with the home side’s intensity.
