The first-round match against Newcastle United (1:0) turned out to be the last in which Manchester United celebrated a win under Rúben Amorim. It would probably have been better for them if the Portuguese coach had stayed, but now they must face a side led by Michael Carrick that looks far stronger.
Newcastle United
Newcastle United have only been able to dominate the champions of Azerbaijan, Qarabağ (6:1, 3:2). Almost any club in England looks capable of beating them at the moment. Perhaps the only exceptions are the struggling Tottenham Hotspur (2:1 in the Premier League) and Aston Villa (3:1 in the cup).
Where has Nick Woltemade's finishing touch gone? This year the German striker has only scored in the cup tie against Aston Villa, and in the league he has not found the net since 20 December, when he scored twice against Chelsea (2:3). That kind of form from the forwards is reflected in the results: five defeats in the last six league matches.
Manchester United
Michael Carrick has brought back life and the spirit of the Sir Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United. The team have shaken off the restrictions of the Portuguese coach, who was unwilling to adapt his philosophy. His departure has turned out to be a positive development for them.
After another win – their sixth in seven league rounds – against Crystal Palace (2:1), they moved up to third place for the first time this season. A place in the Champions League is of course not guaranteed yet, but with this level of performance and results they fully deserve to be in contention for it.
Newcastle United vs Manchester United Prediction
St James' Park was long regarded as Newcastle's stronghold, but recent results there have faded: they have suffered three defeats in a row. In the latest loss to Everton (2:3), two of the goals conceded came from very close range. If Eddie Howe's players continue to make such errors, they will struggle to cope with the ruthless visitors.
We still side with them here, but to be on the safe side we will take them with a 0 handicap.
