Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the NBA match.
The 2025/26 NBA season — the league’s 80th anniversary — tips off with a blockbuster clash between two Western Conference powerhouses. Defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, open their title defence at home against a rejuvenated Houston Rockets side that made one of the biggest offseason moves of the year.
Oklahoma City Thunder
It was a quiet offseason for the Oklahoma City Thunder. The reigning champions focused on recovery rather than rebuilding — their key stars signed new deals and returned to full fitness. Preseason form was encouraging (4-2 record), with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander reminding everyone why he’s an MVP candidate, averaging 17 points and 5.3 assists in just 19 minutes per game.
Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets, by contrast, made headlines by signing 37-year-old Kevin Durant — a move that instantly turned them into serious title contenders. Add in the continued rise of Alperen Şengün, who dominated for Turkey at EuroBasket this summer, and this Rockets team suddenly look dangerous. Head coach Ime Udoka limited his stars to just two preseason appearances, but when they did play, the Rockets’ offence exploded — averaging 135 points per game and overwhelming opponents with sheer firepower.
Oklahoma City Thunder vs Houston Rockets Prediction
Opening night games are often chaotic, with plenty of turnovers and fast breaks, but with the scoring talent on both sides, fireworks are inevitable. Expect a high-paced, entertaining shootout to kick off the new NBA season.
