Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Although it seemed this could have been avoided, Southampton are gradually turning into Luton Town’s analogue from last season, slipping further down the standings. However, Queens Park Rangers, who host the match, also have plenty of issues.
Queens Park Rangers
Last Saturday the team suffered a heavy defeat at Loftus Road Stadium against Ipswich Town (1:4). Two goals were conceded after goalkeeper errors, and two more came directly from free-kicks. At the same time, xGA indicated only one expected goal conceded (1.03). This was Queens Park Rangers’ second loss in a row and third in four rounds. They rarely score more than once — even in the sole win over Swansea City (1:0). Such results have dropped the hosts from sixth to 15th place.
Southampton
One of Southampton’s recent squads risk facing elimination from the Championship. They are three points above the relegation zone. The team have gone five rounds without a win and have lost each of the last three matches. Over this stretch they have scored only three goals (no more than one per game), and the opponents were not leaders. For example, Preston North End, who beat Southampton 2:0 in the last round, rose to sixth place thanks to that victory. After this run the management even dismissed the promising Will Still, and with no replacement yet, Southampton are temporarily led by his young assistant Tonda Eckert.
Queens Park Rangers vs Southampton Prediction
It is unclear who can secure the win here. What is clear is that both teams struggle with goals and conversion, so we recommend an under 2.5 goals bet.
