Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
The clash between Sporting CP and Marseille at Estádio José Alvalade could prove decisive in the race for a top-24 spot in the overall Champions League stage. Both sides face tough schedules ahead, making this fixture vital for their qualification hopes.
Sporting CP
Sporting handled their first European test with relative ease, eventually overpowering Kairat (4:1) after a slow first half. However, their flaws were exposed in the 1:2 defeat to Napoli — despite creating fewer chances (0.87 xG against 1.35 and 8-12 in shots), the Italian champions prevailed through superior quality in key moments. Domestically, the Lisbon side have also shown signs of inconsistency, drawing with Braga (1:1) and narrowly advancing in the Portuguese Cup after extra time against Paços de Ferreira (3:2).
Marseille
Marseille, meanwhile, have hit top gear. A 6:2 demolition of Le Havre, featuring a four-goal haul from Mason Greenwood, marked their fifth consecutive win. Impressively, they’ve kept three clean sheets in that run, including a 1:0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique. In Europe, Marseille were competitive even in defeat to Real Madrid (1:2) and then crushed Ajax (4:0) at the Velodrome.
Sporting CP vs Marseille Prediction
It’s worth remembering that in the 2022/23 group stage, Marseille defeated Sporting twice — 4:1 at home and 2:0 in Lisbon. Given the French side’s current momentum and Sporting’s recent defensive lapses, the visitors look well placed to extend their unbeaten run.
