Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Europa League match.
Utrecht
The Dutch side came through six qualifying fixtures, winning five, though against modest opposition in Sheriff, Servette and Zrinjski. Their Eredivisie campaign has been more difficult, with defeats in half of their games and a lack of attacking edge. They have failed to score in their last two outings, producing less than 1.0 xG in the 0:1 loss to Fortuna Sittard. At home, Utrecht adopt a cautious approach against stronger sides – their last two fixtures in front of their fans ended 0:0 with Zrinjski and 0:1 to Groningen.
Olympique Lyonnais
Despite losing several key players due to financial issues, Paulo Fonseca has quickly reshaped Lyon into a pragmatic yet effective unit. They have taken 12 points from their first five Ligue 1 games, recording four clean-sheet victories. The only defeat came against Rennes (1:3), when they collapsed after a red card. Going forward, Olympique Lyonnais have created plenty – 3.04 xG in a 1:0 win over Marseille, and a total of 10.71 xG across five matches, though only seven goals scored. Their efficiency is reflected in tight scorelines: three wins by 1:0, with four of their five league matches staying under 3.5 goals.
Utrecht vs Olympique Lyonnais Prediction
With Utrecht cautious at home and Lyon efficient but pragmatic, this match should produce goals but not a high-scoring spectacle. The French side look more likely to take points, and the overall tally should remain below the 3.5 line.
