Adam Williams presents his prediction for the Riyadh Season Snooker Championship match.
The Riyadh Season Snooker Championship continues, a tournament with a huge prize fund of £250,000 for the winner. The format is short: first to four frames, so any slip can be decisive. In the quarter-finals Zhao Xintong and Shaun Murphy will meet in a clash between an aggressive style and tactical flexibility.
Zhao Xintong
Zhao Xintong has had a steady month: seven wins in 10 matches, a semi-final last week, and a strong 6:5 victory over Kyren Wilson. The match against Judd Trump (2:6) was weak statistically: 52% accuracy and only one break over 50. But this is not a systemic problem – Judd Trump simply played at his highest level. Otherwise the player is in good rhythm: a reliable long game, a steadily improving conversion of scoring chances, and solid work in prolonged safety exchanges. At the Riyadh Season Snooker Championship he has not had to play extra rounds and comes into this match fresh, without additional workload.
Shaun Murphy
Shaun Murphy is generally having a good spell, but he is inconsistent: four defeats in 10 matches, poor performances against Xiao Guodong, Fan Zhengyi, and John Higgins. The 4:0 win over Ronnie O'Sullivan sounds impressive, but in terms of quality it was nothing special: only two breaks over 50, very low tempo, a lot of tactical play, and the snooker great himself underperformed. Murphy’s problem is the workload: this is his third match in a short span, and the previous two were played on the same day. This has an impact: his positional accuracy drops and his rate of finishing off breaks goes down.
Zhao Xintong vs Shaun Murphy Prediction
In terms of travel and freshness, Zhao Xintong clearly has the advantage. In terms of current form he does as well: he is stable and focused, and in this short format he tends to minimise errors. Shaun Murphy usually relies on an aggressive, high-tempo game, but fatigue is likely to affect that: if he leaves a weak long shot, his opponent will capitalise. In tactical frames the advantage is also with Zhao: he more cleanly escapes from tight positions and gives up the initiative less often.
