The race in Jeddah appears to have shifted the internal dynamics at McLaren, with Oscar Piastri edging ahead in the intra-team competition. If he continues to outperform his teammate, there’s a strong possibility that Lando Norris may be asked to support Piastri’s title ambitions by mid-season.

Piastri’s car continues to show improved pace. While Norris struggles with tyre degradation and fine-tuning his setup, his teammate consistently sets fastest laps and competes for podium finishes. At the same time, Max Verstappen remains firmly in the title race, defying widespread expectations. Even if Red Bull Racing falls short of rivals in certain performance metrics, Verstappen’s skill allows him to achieve top results regardless.

Formula 1 Drivers' Championship Title Betting Odds

Surprisingly, after five rounds, the top four in the standings remain closely bunched together. Piastri leads by just 10 points over the nearest challenger. Verstappen and Norris are separated by only two points.

Even George Russell, driving a clearly underperforming Mercedes, remains within reach of the top three. As for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, his recent form has yielded just 47 points. The same is true for the second Mercedes driver, Kimi Antonelli, who has collected 38 points.

Still, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff maintains a positive outlook and even views the season’s start as a success:

The team has made a strong start, but we can’t afford to slow down. We’re focused on continued improvement and building on the momentum from the first five races.

Is Norris Becoming Lead Driver?

While McLaren maintains that Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are on equal footing, former Haas F1 Team principal Günther Steiner believes the team will eventually favour Oscar Piastri as the lead driver after the summer break:

It’s too soon to make that call, but if Max Verstappen keeps up his current form, McLaren will need to define a clear driver hierarchy. Everyone can see Oscar’s talent. He’s composed and focused under pressure. He doesn’t get flustered when he finishes second. He’s extremely mature.

This focus on maturity, composure, and consistent execution of team strategy could be decisive. At this stage, Norris has yet to demonstrate the same level of focus and calm under pressure.

His error rate remains high, and as seen with Liam Lawson, team principals no longer have the luxury of extending repeated second chances.

Bookmakers continue to back Oscar Piastri’s momentum. Given his motivation and pace, there’s every reason to believe this bet could pay off by season’s end.

Miami Grand Prix History

One of the most recent additions to the Formula 1 calendar, the Miami Grand Prix debuted in 2022. The city had initially proposed hosting the race in 2018, but delays in circuit construction postponed its inclusion.

Max Verstappen holds the record for most wins in Miami, with victories in both 2022 and 2023. However, in 2024, Lando Norris secured his first win at this venue.

Miami Grand Prix Prediction

Based on early-season form, this may be the ideal time to back Oscar Piastri for the win. His superior car setup, pace, and tyre management could prove decisive in Miami.

Tyre wear is expected to play a major role this weekend. There’s reason to believe Max Verstappen could manage this more effectively than an aggressive and emotionally charged Lando Norris, who can sometimes push too hard during extended cornering battles.

It’s unlikely that any other driver will break into the top three. Ferrari continues to struggle with inconsistent setups, and George Russell lacks sufficient cornering speed when the car is heavy with fuel.

Miami Grand Prix Schedule and Weather Forecast

Friday and Saturday should see partly cloudy skies in Miami with no rainfall and temperatures up to 30°C. On Sunday, brief showers are expected, with highs reaching 29°C.
