Review of the bookmaker Betfred from Legalbet

Betfred was founded in 1967 by Fred and Pete Done. By 2004, it had an annual turnover of £3.5bn and has continued to grow at an incredible rate; by 2019, total amounts wagered reached £13.5bn. Betfred currently operates over 1,300 betting shops worldwide, as well as shops at fifty-one racecourses around the country.

Betfred has made a name for itself by occasionally paying out before results were confirmed. The first time was in March 1998, when it paid out bets on Manchester United to win the Premier League, only for Arsenal to pip them by one point. Betfred has subsequently done this many times with no loss; however, it also paid out early on Manchester United to win the 2011/12 title, only for Manchester City to beat them on goal difference.

Odds - Average

The margin for Betfred has been calculated by analysing the odds available across a range of markets and leagues from around the world. When these odds are combined and averaged, we label each site as follows:

From 1% to 5%: Good value

Over 5% to 7%: Average value

Over 7% to 10%: Poor value

Football

We obtained our results by analysing the match result odds alongside the over/under markets across different football leagues. By averaging the results using this method, we were able to calculate the margins for each league, as well as the overall betting margin for the bookmaker. The latest results for Betfred are:

UK leagues (Premier League & Championship)

 5.92%

European leagues (La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga)

 6.1%

Rest of the world (Turkish Süper Lig, Australian A League, MLS (United States))

 8.37%

Betfred’s average margin is 6.8% for football and falls into the average category. The data and specifics of how these odds were compiled can be viewed at the link below:

Bookmakers margin

Range of Sports and Markets - Good

Range of Sports: Betfred covers 23 different sports from around the world and also offers a “Virtual” betting section. The sports categories they list are: American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Darts, Esports, Football, Gaelic Games, Golf, Greyhounds, Horse Racing, Hurling, Ice Hockey, Motor Sports, Politics, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Snooker, Specials, Tennis, UFC / MMA.

Range of Bets and Markets: Most bookmakers focus on football first, but at Betfred, it is horse racing where they show the most attention to detail and the largest number of betting options available. Fred Done (co-founder of Betfred) is credited with creating the Lucky 15, which revolutionised the standard accumulator model. Coupled with the fact that Betfred is currently the sole operator of pool betting on British horse racing, this makes Betfred a go-to option for horse racing betting connoisseurs. They are far ahead of the competition in terms of offering bets such as the “Yankee”, the “Canadian” and the “Heinz”.

They cover all UK meetings as well as most from the rest of the world, especially major ante-post meetings. At UK meetings, you can bet at Early Price as well as Starting Price, and they were one of the first bookmakers to offer “Best Odds Guaranteed”.

Football is Betfred’s second focus, and all UK leagues are well catered for, with tournaments also priced up in the early rounds and U21 and women’s matches also included. A typical Premier League match would have over 150 betting options to choose from, and lower-division matches slightly fewer, but still more than enough.

Betting Limits: Betfred is a proper bookmaker that takes an opinion and stands by it. You can place very large bets on most lines without raising eyebrows.

In-Play Betting - Good

Betfred has a solid selection of sports available for live betting, with In-Play markets for sports such as football, cricket, ice hockey, tennis and basketball. However, a gap in its live betting offering is the lack of horse racing coverage (though this is fairly common due to the fast-paced nature of a horse race).

The range of In-Play markets is well above average, not just allowing bets on who will win but also more niche, quick-fire events — such as whether the next game in tennis will go to deuce, or whether the next frame in snooker will include a 100+ break. The odds here are shorter than the odds Betfred offers pre-match, but they are still very competitive.

Live Streaming

Betfred offers some TV coverage of sports you can watch, and within the In-Play section there is a handy tab showing what is available to watch right now, as well as what is coming up.

Coverage varies depending on licensing rights, which determine exactly how many events — and which matches — can be shown. Customers must be logged into their Betfred account and have a cash balance of at least £0.01 to access live streams.

Betfred Mobile App

Betfred offers a well-designed sports betting app, which has already been downloaded by many customers. The app is free and available on Android and iOS via Google Play and the App Store.

How To Register At Betfred

Registering at Betfred is quick and easy. To begin, click on the green “Register” button located on the homepage. There are five screens to complete, but each step clearly explains what is required, and the process should take no more than five minutes from start to finish.

  1. The first page asks you to pick a username. This must be unique (so nobody else can have already taken it) and must also be a combination of letters and at least one number. You also enter your password here; this must be a minimum of eight characters and include at least one letter and one number. Do not forget to tick the box to confirm that you are over 18 years of age and that you agree to the various T&Cs. Then click “Continue”.

  2. The second page asks for a few personal details. Enter your name and select the title you would like to be addressed by, then add your date of birth. All information provided here must match your photographic ID (usually your passport).

  3. The third screen is where you provide contact details. Enter your email address and a contact telephone number (mobile or landline). You can also choose a security question and answer — keep these safe, as they may be needed if you ever have to contact customer support.

  4. The penultimate screen requires you to enter your address, which should match the address linked to the bank account you deposit with. You can enter your postcode and then choose from the drop-down list. If your address does not appear, there is an option to add it manually.

  5. On the final screen, confirm the currency you wish to use (GBP or euros). Select how you would like to be contacted about promotions and offers, and key point: enter a promo code if you have one (sometimes this will be filled in automatically). If it has not been added and you want to take part in the welcome bonus, this is where you need to enter the relevant code.

  6. Finally, click “Register” to create your account.

How To Deposit At Betfred

When it comes to depositing at Betfred this is also made easy for you. The first thing to do is log into your account, and from there click on the green deposit button in the top right of the screen.

  1. First, log in to your account and click the green “Deposit” button in the top right of the screen.

  2. Choose the payment method you want to use, then click “Deposit” next to your chosen option. In this example, we use a debit card. Enter the requested card details, choose the amount you want to deposit, then click “Deposit”.

  3. If everything is entered correctly, you will see a confirmation pop-up message and the funds will be available to use immediately.

  4. In future, once you have used a payment method, you will not need to re-enter all details every time. They are saved in your Betfred account, and next time you typically only need to enter the CVC code and the amount.

How To Bet At Betfred

Placing a wager at Betfred is easy, and the steps are much the same regardless of what you want to bet on.

  1. First, navigate to the sport you want to bet on. You can use a quick link if you have saved it as a favourite, but if not, clicking “All Sports” will bring up the full alphabetical list.

  2. In this example, we have clicked on “Football”. Here you will initially see the main matches currently In-Play, as well as the latest offers and price boosts relevant to this sport across the top.

  3. If you are not wagering In-Play and are looking for a regular match, clicking on the “Competitions” tab will show a breakdown of each tournament and league that Betfred offers odds on.

  4. We have selected the EFL Cup and chosen the match Newcastle v Southampton. This page includes useful statistics, including the teams’ current form, as well as the option to view predicted line-ups. It also confirms exactly when the match will take place. You can scroll down to view all available betting options, but here we are simply going to back Newcastle to win. Any time you see a bet you want to place, you can do so by clicking on the odds available.

  5. Once you click on the odds, a new bet slip opens on the right of the screen, confirming your selection. Enter your stake in the box provided, and the estimated returns will be calculated automatically. If you are happy with everything, click “Place Bet”.

  6. You should then see a confirmation message that the bet has been placed successfully. You can click “Continue” to carry on betting, or log out if you wish. If you do not see a confirmation message, check the “My Bets” area and consider contacting customer support for further assistance.

How To Withdraw At Betfred

To withdraw from any bookmaker, you must be logged in and have a withdrawable balance. As a rule, this means funds that are not subject to bonus restrictions and that have been wagered at least once since being deposited. You will also typically need to withdraw back to the payment method you used to deposit.

  1. At Betfred, click on your available balance in the top right of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear, and within the list of account options you will see “Withdraw”. Click this.

  2. You will then be taken to a screen showing your account details and your “Cash Balance”, which is the amount you can withdraw at that time. Below this, you will see the available withdrawal methods — choose the option you want to use (note that the original deposited amount must be returned via the same method you used to deposit).

  3. If you select the debit card option, the card details you last used to deposit will usually appear automatically. You may also see a reminder of the £5 minimum deposit at Betfred, but in this example we are withdrawing £8.68, so it does not apply.

  4. After clicking “Withdraw”, you should see a confirmation message. You then simply wait for the funds to arrive. Betfred advises that withdrawals can take up to five working days, although in our test the funds arrived in under five minutes.

Licensing & Safety

Betfred is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission; its licence number is 39544. At the time of writing, there has been one regulatory action in recent years. The UK Gambling Commission last fined Betfred on December 3, 2025, for anti-money-laundering and social-responsibility violations, resulting in an £825,000 penalty.

Service & Customer Support

Phone - 0800 028 7747 (8am - 8pm)

Live Chat - 24/7

Twitter - twitter.com/betfred

When we opened live chat, we found we were second in the queue. While it is a little frustrating not to be connected immediately, being able to see an estimated wait time was helpful. It took just over seven minutes to reach an agent, and we were connected to a real person straight away. You must answer some basic security questions before support can help you, but once that is done, it took a further minute to get an answer to our question.

Betfred Casino Review

Betfred has a casino section on its website, which can be accessed by clicking the ‘Casino’ tab on the Betfred homepage. As well as the popular casino games you would expect, such as blackjack and roulette, there is also a huge range of slot games, with new titles added frequently. Several casino promotions are also available.

Live Casino

The Betfred live casino is regulated by the UK Gambling Commission and the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner, who ensure high standards of practice are adhered to. The site uses SSL technology, so any information you share is kept secure.

The games in the Betfred live casino feature live dealers, who interact with you by dealing the cards and talking you through the game, aiming to recreate the atmosphere of an in-person, land-based casino.

As well as the main games of Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat and Hold’Em, there are also exciting new versions of Age of the Gods Roulette. In addition, there are fun game-show-type games such as Money Drop, Deal or No Deal, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? with live presenters. If you enjoy this kind of entertainment, you can also play daily free games.
