Odds on next England manager: bookmakers reveal top five favorites
Gareth Southgate stepped down as England manager after the Three Lions were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday. Besides two great campaigns in Euros there was a Nations League third place in 2019. The team rooted for Gareth, besides criticism about Southgate's defensive tactics the Three Lions reached the final of Euro 2024.
So the new chapter has begun and bookies have revealed candidates for the England manager job. Let’s explore England’s next manager odds.
Who will be the next England manager?

England next manager odds
Dream on with Graham Potter
Age: 49
Country: England
Last position: Chelsea
Career Timeline (Manager): 2008-2023
After his departure from Chelsea Graham decided to take a break. A year later he is in the driver seat ̶o̶f̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶b̶r̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶n̶e̶w̶ ̶N̶i̶m̶b̶u̶s̶ ̶2̶0̶2̶4̶ to become the next England manager. And this work makes perfect sense for both FA and Graham.
The main Potter’s strength is his magical development of young players. He arrived at Brighton with one main job: to lower the average age. Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister, Trossard, Cucurella all made Premier League debuts under Potter, became great players and were sold for significant fees to Premier League giants.
England has a core of young talents so Potter makes perfect sense and the main task ahead of 2026 World Cup is maximizing the team's potential.
Lee Carsley = Southgate’s clone
Age: 50
Country: Republic of Ireland
Current position: England U-21
Career Timeline (Manager): 2012-present
Carsley is the easiest candidate to appoint because he’s been the manager of England Under-21s for the last three years, and has useful experience in under-19 and under-20 teams. Needless to say that he is an authority for the current England setup. So like Southgate before him, Carsley has almost four years of experience in the Three Lions HQ, and knows every core player.
But we believe that he’s going to turn down the potential offer despite being highly rated within the FA. Firstly — he likes his current assignment, secondly — he turned down the job offer from the Republic of Ireland — his natives.
Eddie Howe is unreal
Age: 46
Country: England
Current position: Newcastle United
Career Timeline (Manager): 2008-present
Lifting Newcastle from the relegation positions, fourth place in the Premier League, great performance in the Champions League’s 'Group of Death' and a cup final is a serious list of achievements, and the FA has to make an attractive proposition. Like Dr King Shultz (FA) to Calvin Candie (Newcastle) in Tarantino's Django Unchained.
Prove us wrong, but when the top-3 candidate says: “In the short term, it is not on my radar at all. It is all Newcastle and trying to make this team better.” The deal is far from reality. Plus Howe has previously said that being removed from day-to-day coaching “is not something I want to do”. Surely the FA should be in talks with Howe and Newcastle, but leaving Tyne is a hard mission for England.
Mauricio Pochettino: an Argentinian to look for
Age: 52
Country: Argentina
Last position: Chelsea
Career Timeline (Manager): 2009-present
Pochettino is still ready for the next step after the Hotspurs. PSG and Chelsea showed that he lacks balance in his teams, especially defensively. Surely he’s a big name in the football world and knows almost every player in the Premier League but he’s not a guaranteed success — and we all understand that bagging him is the story of expectations… that he won't achieve.
International football is grounded and England showed that it can't achieve anything playing forward and attacking football. So Poch and defense are way too polar. As Poch and the England national team. But! He’s also available and ready to go as his most recent coaching gig was leading the World XI at Stamford Bridge for Soccer Aid last month.
The third one from Chelsea. Is Tuchel worth it?
Age: 50
Country: Germany
Last position: Bayern Munich
Career Timeline (Manager): 2007-present
After leaving Bayern Munich Thomas Tuchel is the next head coach of _____ (Man Utd, Germany, PSG again and a bunch of different teams, yes, you can write your own option) and the bookies listed him in the top-5 for the England job.
Tuchel’s tactical approach and acumen are inevitable but his personality is a question mark. Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are his three recent clubs in four years. Problems with the chairmans and the board of all teams — key factors of contract terminations. Plus Thomas looked exhausted after this year's Bayern campaign. So there's no chance that Tuchel is ready for a long shot.
England football managers during the last 20 years
Gareth Southgate is one of the best England managers of all time. Southgate led England to successive European Championship finals and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. That ranks him just behind England's World Cup-winning manager Sir Alf Ramsey.
He’s number two according to Jamie Carragher:

Southgate’s next destination
Gareth went straight into management in 2006 after ending his playing career at Middlesbrough. After three (and a bit) seasons with Boro Southgate took a short pit-stop to take a deep breath before joining the FA and England U-21 squad in 2013.
11 years later Southgate is ready to dive into club football. And here's the top five destinations for him.
