After a shockingly poor qualifying performance by Red Bulls followed by equally disappointing race results, bookmakers have further lost faith in Max Verstappen’s potential future victories. Meanwhile, odds for Lando Norris and the Italian sensation Charles Leclerc are becoming increasingly favourable.

Who will win the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

After the Monza debacle, Red Bulls fans aren't laughing as hard when talks turn to Lando’s championship chances. Yes, the gap between drivers remains substantial, but McLaren still have a couple of races in hand to narrow the margin.

On the other hand, Ferrari are still celebrating. Charles Leclerc clinched his first victory since Monaco, trimming his deficit to Lando Norris down to just 24 points.

In the recent Italian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc secured first place, Lando Norris climbed to third, while Max Verstappen could only manage a sixth-place finish.

Betting odds for the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship title

It’s time for the McLaren bosses to decide if they are ready to guard Lando’s position for a potential championship win. From the perspective of fan appeal, intrigue, and spectacle, Oscar Piastri’s second place in Italy was a stunning nod to the aggressive Formula of the past.

However, it’s conceivable that the older Sebastian Vettel- Mark Webber or more recent Max Verstappen- Sergio Perez strategy seems more logical for the current McLaren. Perhaps the team should indeed consider reining in Oscar Piastri if he continues to contend with his teammate. After all, it could eventually lead to a Lewis Hamilton-Nico Rosberg-style collision and a fresh wave of intra-team scandals.

Additionally, the McLaren boss Andrea Stella has pragmatically assessed the outcomes in Monza, admitting that their car is no longer the fastest in the pack, while praising the efforts of the Ferrari drivers and mechanics:

There’s a misconception that our car significantly outpaces everyone else. However, in my view, Leclerc was able to drive as fast as the McLaren drivers in Monza, staying close to Oscar Piastri in the first stint.

Ultimately, podium finishes for Oscar won’t bring him any closer to a title but could undermine Lando’s results. There’s a suspicion that Stella has already made his choice. He doesn’t believe in the success of his leader, allowing the drivers to compete and showing other teams a purported lack of a "first" and "second" driver policy. In reality, if Lando gains a significant points lead next season, Piastri will likely be asked to ease off occasionally.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix History

One of the youngest stages in Formula 1, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix debuted only in 2016, initially under the name European Grand Prix.

This race traditionally takes place on a street circuit that serves as a public road for civilian and public transport when not in use for the event.

The first winner of the full-fledged Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017 was Daniel Ricciardo, driving for Red Bull. However, the most frequent winner here has been Sergio Perez, with wins in 2021 and 2023.

The track length is 6003 metres, with the total race distance clocking in at 306,049 metres.

Baku's circuit has primarily won fans’ hearts due to its stunning combination of high-speed straights and sharp 90-degree turns, which have seen even the most experienced drivers lose control of their cars.

The End of the Verstappen Era and the Phantom Chase for the Title

The problems facing Red Bull are no longer just a fluke or a warning sign—they are hard facts. Regardless of the track type, tires, or weather conditions, the car clearly underperforms in terms of dynamics and stability. Surprisingly, stability used to be a strong suit for Red Bull. Other teams' updates are evidently working, while the engineering department in Milton Keynes is scrambling to fix the situation.

According to Michael Schumacher's brother, Ralf Schumacher, we might soon hear about some unpleasant dismissals and reshuffles within their team:

Want an honest answer? It's over for Red Bull. Heads will roll because of prevailing uncertainty and dissatisfaction. They'll then have to gel with new personnel and those who remain, under immense pressure from all sides. It's a chain reaction, but Formula 1 moves too quickly to wait around.

In response, Christian Horner assures journalists that peace and calm reign in the team, and Max is patiently listening and "understanding the situation." Whether this is true or not, we may not know (at least until the season's end).

However, one thing is certain: for Lando to contend for the title, he must give his all and leave no room for Verstappen or his teammate. Yes, Red Bull has clear issues, but the car's pace and Max’s skill are still sufficient to place in the top five, even contending for 2nd or 3rd place. So, regardless of how fast McLaren's drivers are, it seems the title’s fate is already sealed, even if the points gap is minimal by the season's end.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix Prediction

The main question after Monza is whether Ferrari can aim for the win again. Undoubtedly, yes. While Sainz might not yet measure up to his teammate, Charles has everything needed to put up a fight against McLaren on a track like this. Thus, betting on Leclerc finishing in the top tier and even winning seems logical.

In previous Grands Prix, bookmakers were confident that Max would at least finish in the top three, but this optimism has waned approaching the Baku stage. Especially with two super-fast straights where Red Bull will struggle to hold back McLaren and Ferrari.

As for Piastri's chances, things are less straightforward. He has clearly demonstrated an impressive driving level at Monza, but there are doubts that the challenging Azerbaijan track will be a tough test for him. Last year’s car didn’t allow him to race at such speeds. However, it’s doubtful that the new, bolder car will significantly improve the situation for this Formula 1 junior. Thus, betting on him finishing in the top three is quite a risky wager.
