First Time Since 2006? Newcastle United's Odds and Chances for a Trophy in 2024-25
Isak is the New Shearer?
Newcastle United have reached the EFL Cup final for the second time in three years. They are just three points off the Champions League spots, remain in the FA Cup race, and Alexander Isak is competing for the Golden Boot alongside Haaland and Salah.
Who Will Win the EFL Cup 2025?
Let’s break down their trophy chances and Newcastle United’s prospects for a successful season. And, of course, we’ll highlight the best betting options.
Newcastle United 2024-25 Betting Odds
The euphoria surrounding the Saudi investment has settled. Winning the league isn’t a realistic goal for Newcastle United, but merely repeating last season’s 7th-place finish wouldn’t be considered a success either. The ideal middle ground? Securing another Champions League spot.
That means competing against the giants – Chelsea and Man City – as well as the ambitious underdogs from Nottingham Forest. Among this quartet, Newcastle have the lowest odds of finishing in the top four, according to the bookmakers.
Newcastle United Premier League Top Finish Odds
Following the arrival of new owners and a takeover reportedly approved by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince (according to leaked Guardian reports), Newcastle have finished in the top six only once. However, with the instability of Man City and Chelsea this season, it's too early for despair.
What matters more is that under their new ownership, Newcastle reached a domestic cup final for the first time in 24 years. However, there's no need for false hope—no underdog has won the EFL Cup final in the last 10 years. Their opponents, Liverpool, have won two of their three finals in that same period.
They're also just one step away from the FA Cup quarter-finals. We have little doubt that the Magpies will overcome Brighton. Their last FA Cup final appearance dates back to the late 1990s, but right now, they are the bookmakers' second-favourite to win the trophy, behind only Man City.
Squad, Transfers, and Individual Award Contenders
At the start of the season, Opta ranked Newcastle as the fifth-favourite to finish in the top four. Unlike last season, when European competition was a major distraction, they are now fully focused on domestic success. Injuries, which plagued them last season, have not been as severe this time—Tottenham has taken on that burden instead. However, Newcastle have only two players in four key positions, which could lead to trouble.
Right Winger: Miguel Almirón, Jacob Murphy
Left Central Midfielder: Joelinton, Joe Willock
Central Midfielder: Bruno Guimarães, Isaac Hayden
Right Center-Back: Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles
Their transfer activity was relatively quiet before the season began:
Lewis Hall’s loan from Chelsea was made permanent.
Vlachodimos arrived from Nottingham Forest.
William Osula was signed from relegated Sheffield United.
Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy joined on free transfers.
The main priority, however, was retaining Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward was even tipped for the PFA Player of the Year award. While that might have to wait, his goal-scoring form remains impressive—19 goals, third in the league, just one behind Haaland. But how does he catch Salah?
Jacob Murphy has also stepped up this season, registering 8 assists, just two behind joint-second Saka, Damsgaard, and Robinson. But Salah, with 17 assists, remains untouchable.
Newcastle’s goalkeepers have also been solid. Martin Dúbravka, with 5 clean sheets, is among the Premier League’s top 10. However, bookmakers still favour Nick Pope, albeit with unrealistic odds.
Eddie Howe’s fast-paced, dynamic style revolves around attacking transitions and a high press, particularly in the middle third. This allows Gordon, Isak, and Barnes to exploit space, fed by the brilliant Bruno Guimarães—but also exposes them defensively as the game opens up.
Newcastle rank third in the league for through balls (64), behind only Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Newcastle’s 2024-25 Season Prediction
For the first time since Bobby Robson’s era, Newcastle are serious contenders for multiple trophies—three, to be exact. However, they remain underdogs in all competitions, which is why betting on them to end the season trophyless offers the lowest odds.
We've already discussed their chances of beating Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. Ironically, we believe they have a better shot at winning the FA Cup than overcoming Liverpool at Wembley. A bet on them lifting either trophy would likely be a smart play—unless they win nothing at all.
Winning two trophies
16/1
or all three
1000/1
seems far-fetched. However, history suggests that the fourth season under new ownership is when teams backed by significant financial power break through—both Chelsea and Man City secured their first major trophies within this timeframe.
