The Hundred men's tournament playoffs: favourites and odds

This summer marks the fourth consecutive year of The Hundred - a  external linkExternal links are prohibited tournament featuring eight teams located in major cities across England and Wales. The playoffs start on August 17th.

One of the most popular competitions in Britain, with an audience of around 15 million each year, is known for its unpredictability. In the men's division, no team has managed to win twice. While the reigning champions and main favourites, the Oval Invincibles, will try to defend their title, we will examine the main contenders, bookmakers’ odds, and each team’s chances as they approach the playoffs.

Oval Invincibles

Last year, the London-based team won both the group stage with impressive 13 points and the final against Manchester Originals by 14 runs. The best player of the final game, Tom Curran, is still in the squad. Just as last season's top 5 runner Will Jacks and Nathan Sowter with 11 wickets under his belt. 

The biggest loss for Invincibles is Gus Atkinson who is out until the end of the Test series against the West Indies. However, the team looks extremely strong with a top-class leg-spinner Adam Zampa being on fire having multiple “player of the match” awards so far.

Southern Brave

One of the top three teams from last season was unfortunate enough to lose the eliminator against Manchester by 7 wickets. But they are determined to claim the title this year being the one and only team without any replacements in the squad.

With Finn Allen (the second-highest run-scorer from last season) and Tymal Mills (the best bowler from last season with 16 wickets) in the squad, the team could have started more confidently. A win against London Spirit and a loss to Northern Superchargers left a mixed impression. However, the team's potential is so high that they remain one of the top contenders for the title. Trent Rockets

Last year, Trent Rockets fell short of the playoffs by just two points. Andy Flower’s team did not look consistent enough throughout the last season. Dawid Malan and Alex Hales failed to fire consistently. Even the bowling unit, led by the third best wicket-taker Daniel Sams (12), struggled with economy rates. Trent Rockets traditionally started the season inconsistently, opening with a resounding victory over Northern Superchargers by 47 runs with Chris Green named the best player. Narrow victory over Manchester by just 1 run was followed by the defeat from Birmingham Phoenix.
