Adam Williams presents his prediction for the Cheltenham 2m Southam Handicap Chase (Class 2, 2m, 4yo+) horse racing event.
Born in Germany, Calico was initially entered in the Shloer Chase; however, his team wisely decided that he stands a better chance here. Calico secured a victory at Cheltenham on October 25, outperforming the favourite, Matata. Last season, although a couple of runner-up finishes were achieved, he didn't clinch any victories. In his final race of the season, on May 6 at Kempton, he didn’t finish, as 3lb claimer Tristan Durrell pulled him up before the last fence.
Libberty Hunter had a strong previous season, apart from an early fall in his opening run. He won his subsequent two starts, achieved second place in the Grand Annual Challenge Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, and secured third in the Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree.
Petit Tonnerre had an underwhelming last season, without any wins and a mix of both hurdle and chase races. This season, he started twice in hurdles in May and June but came back stronger after a break, finishing a close second in the Novices' Limited Handicap Chase at Aintree in October, trailing joint-favourite Imperial Saint by less than a length.
Matata, who was a beaten favourite in his season opener against Calico, had a promising start to the last season, winning his debut and securing two runner-up spots, before his fortunes changed in two Grade 1 races.
Gunsight Ridge is a solid competitor. Last season, he performed well in handicaps, with one fall, two victories, and three paid positions. However, this competition might prove to be too challenging for him.
