Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Miami Masters match.
Jordan Thompson is ranked 35 places below tournament top seed Alexander Zverev in the ATP rankings, but it wouldn’t be accurate to say he has no real chance of winning. Their head-to-head record is currently tied at 2-2 from four encounters.
Their most recent meeting was at the 2024 Montreal Masters, where Zverev absolutely dismantled Jordan Thompson (6:1, 6:1) in under an hour. However, just months earlier in Los Cabos, Thompson pulled off a huge upset in a gruelling three-set semi-final that lasted over 3 hours and 40 minutes, en route to his first ATP title, where he defeated Casper Ruud in the final.
However, this season has been difficult for Jordan from the outset. At the very first tournament in Brisbane, Australia, he suffered a calf injury in the quarter-final against Grigor Dimitrov (1:6, 1:2). He managed to recover in time for the Australian Open just ten days later, but the recent injury clearly hampered him in the second round. Thompson didn’t put up the fight he was capable of, losing to Nuno Borges (3:6, 2:6, 4:6). Following this setback, the Australian took a month and a half to recover, only returning to action at Indian Wells in early March. His comeback was short-lived, as he lost in the first round to Corentin Moutet (4:6, 6:4, 3:6).
Alexander Zverev vs Jordan Thompson Prediction
In Miami, Thompson edged past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (7:6, 7:6) in a match that saw two tight tie-breaks and lasted 1 hour 37 minutes. While that was a solid win, it doesn’t mask the fact that Thompson still looks short of peak form, and his physical sharpness remains questionable. We think the prolonged match and lack of form will take their toll, so we’re likely to see a result more similar to their previous encounter. Therefore, we’re predicting a comfortable win for Alexander Zverev.
