The Argentina national team have performed so strongly against New Zealand and Australia in the first four rounds that they still have a chance of winning the tournament overall. However, they need to defeat South Africa twice, which is challenging given their history of only three victories in 30 years of encounters.
Argentina
Argentina split victories with Australia in the third and fourth rounds. While Argentina's loss (19:20) was heartbreaking, Australia's defeat (27:67) was a crushing blow and a disgrace. The South Americans helped the Australians set an anti-record (67 conceded points). The stats were not particularly impressive for Australia in any area, but in terms of speed, they clearly fell short. Argentina's backline and midfield also troubled the All Blacks. Containing them will be a key task for South Africa.
South Africa
Facing the All Blacks was destined to be tough. There were no other expectations. South Africa’s victories in both encounters were deserved. Experienced players came through at crucial moments in the second halves, whereas the New Zealand side lacked such composure. From the 51st minute, the All Blacks did not score a single point, while South Africa managed to score two tries. Argentina cannot afford any send-offs in this match.
Argentina vs South Africa Prediction
In 36 head-to-head clashes, Argentina have won only three times, all in the 2010s, twice in Argentina and once in South Africa. Their eight-match losing streak could have ended in 2023 in the last Rugby Championship, but a missed conversion at the end cost them the win (21:22). To remain untouchable, South Africa will give their all and win — at least by a small margin.
