Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the DFB-Pokal match.
One of the most intriguing ties in the DFB-Pokal Round of 16 clearly has a favourite. Despite Arminia Bielefeld's strong performance in the German Third League, they are no match for Freiburg's squad depth. Freiburg are well-equipped and could make another run to the tournament final.
Arminia Bielefeld
Last Friday, Arminia Bielefeld overcame another former Bundesliga side, Ingolstadt 04 (1:0), dominating the majority of the match (4-1 in shots on target). A month ago, the Bielefeld side sensationally defeated Union Berlin (2:0), although the usually resolute Union Berlin created more chances (4-7 in shots on target). Arminia Bielefeld are likely to play an aggressive 4-1-4-1 formation again with Stefano Russo as the single defensive midfielder, which could be vulnerable to Freiburg's fast flanks.
Freiburg
After a heavy defeat from Borussia Dortmund (0:4), Freiburg regrouped and beat Borussia Mönchengladbach (3:1) on Saturday, generating 1.61 xG over 90 minutes. It seems they have found an ideal attacking setup. Lucas Höler has dropped into a deeper forward role and scored twice on Saturday, while Michael Gregoritsch dominates aerial duels. Freiburg already have a solid track record in this year's Cup, having defeated 2. Bundesliga leaders Hamburger (2:1) on 30 October.
Arminia Bielefeld vs Freiburg Prediction
Home advantage has slightly closed the gap between Arminia Bielefeld and Freiburg, but the former Cup finalists boast excellent attacking form. The favourite is expected to prevail in regulation time and shift focus back to their league preparations.
