Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
Arsenal defeated Athletic Bilbao (2:0), while Olympiacos could not break down tournament debutants Pafos (0:0). This meeting in England is a chance for the hosts to consolidate their position among the frontrunners, and for the visitors to try to halt a long slump in European competition.
Arsenal
Arsenal started the season confidently and continue to hold their place near the top of the English Premier League. The 2:1 win over Newcastle United was a turning point: the team not only ended a poor run at St James’ Park, but also cut the gap to the leaders to two points. In the Champions League, Arsenal have won their last 13 home group-stage matches, 10 of which ended with a clean sheet. Squad depth is a key factor, with players from the bench regularly coming on and making an impact. The hosts have already shown an ability this season to build on a lead after the interval and to maintain a high tempo from the first whistle.
Olympiacos
The UEFA Champions League start for Olympiacos proved disappointing: despite a numerical advantage and 18 attempts on goal, the team could not score against Pafos. This extends a bleak record of just two wins in 21 group-stage matches and 16 defeats. Another worrying statistic is 10 consecutive away defeats in the Champions League, with the last away victory dating back to October 2015. Historically, Olympiacos have troubled Arsenal, with six wins in 12 head-to-head meetings, including three in a row at the Emirates. However, this squad do not look capable of springing a surprise; the defence is markedly inferior to the hosts’ attack.
Arsenal vs Olympiacos Prediction
Arsenal are in excellent form and rarely slip up on home soil. Olympiacos can impose themselves in the Greek Super League, but the team have struggled to translate that to the Champions League. The expectation is that the hosts will start on the front foot and try to settle the contest by half-time. A fast game from the hosts is anticipated, with at least two goals before the interval.
