Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA 1000 Miami Open match.
Viktoriya Tomova’s Miami Open campaign has been a rollercoaster ride. After battling past the world No. 414 in the opening round, she now faces a monumental jump in quality—going up against the best player on the WTA Tour. Can the Bulgarian handle such a drastic shift?
Aryna Sabalenka
As the tournament’s top seed, Sabalenka begins her campaign in Miami at this stage. The Belarusian recently reached the final in Indian Wells, aiming for her first WTA-1000 title of the season, but fell short against Mirra Andreeva (2:6, 6:4, 3:6). Despite earlier struggles in Doha (round of 32) and Dubai (round of 16), her deep run in California signals strong form heading into this event.
Viktoriya Tomova
Tomova endured a tough first-round battle against Katie McNally, needing 2 hours and 16 minutes to get past the American (6:3, 2:6, 6:3). While McNally was ranked higher than Tomova in 2023 (54th vs 71st), the Bulgarian’s record this season is uninspiring—just 5 wins in 12 matches. The highest-ranked player she has defeated in 2024 is world No. 41 Olga Danilovic, which does not bode well for her chances against the world No. 1.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Viktoriya Tomova Prediction
These two have never met at a serious level, but based purely on their rankings and form, Sabalenka should have no trouble dispatching Tomova in dominant fashion.
