Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Wimbledon match.
31st seed Ashlyn Krueger will take on world No. 50 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in the third round of Wimbledon. The odds are close, and not long ago it was the Russian who featured in the world’s top 30.
Ashlyn Krueger
Krueger is steadily climbing the rankings, even if her results haven’t been all that impressive of late. She exited in the first round at both of her grass-court warm-up events — losing to world No. 11 Elena Rybakina in Berlin (3:6, 6:7) and to No. 21 Beatriz Haddad Maia in Bad Homburg (1:6, 4:6). At Wimbledon, she eased past rising British junior Mika Stojsavljevic (6:3, 6:2) in the opening round.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Pavlyuchenkova opted for a different preparation route, resting for nearly a month before entering the low-tier Eastbourne tournament in the final week of June. There, she reached the semi-finals but didn’t face any higher-ranked opponents and ultimately fell short of the title. Earlier this spring, she also suffered defeats to players outside the top 30 and 40.
Ashlyn Krueger vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Prediction
We expect 21-year-old Ashlyn Krueger, who is just beginning to hit her stride, to advance to the third round — where she could meet Naomi Osaka or Katerina Siniakova, and possibly go even further.
