Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Madrid match.
On paper, Ashlyn Krueger and Anastasia Potapova appear to be evenly matched. Krueger currently holds the 35th spot in the WTA rankings, while Potapova is close behind at 38th, making it difficult to identify a clear favourite. The two have never faced each other in a competitive match before.
Ashlyn Krueger
So far this season, Krueger has been noticeably more active on the tour. She has entered ten tournaments, compared to six for Anastasia Potapova, and also leads in match wins — 16 to 12. Notably, Krueger is the only one of the pair who has already played on clay in 2025. At the Charleston tournament, she defeated fellow American Katie Volynets (World No. 78) 3:6, 6:7, before falling to World No. 11 Emma Navarro in the next round, 6:4, 4:6, 2:6. Her most notable WTA 1000 performance this year came in Miami, where she advanced to the Round of 16.
Anastasia Potapova
Since mid-February, Potapova has not progressed past the second round in any of her appearances. However, all three events were at the high-tier WTA level. While she clearly possesses talent, her form remains inconsistent. She has proven capable of upsetting higher-ranked opponents — as shown by her dominant 6:3, 6:0 victory over World No. 16 Beatriz Haddad Maia in Dubai — but also suffers unexpected defeats, such as her first-round loss to Kimberly Birrell in Miami (6:3, 3:6, 6:7), who is ranked outside the top 50.
Ashlyn Krueger vs Anastasia Potapova Prediction
With both players so evenly matched, this encounter has the potential to go the full distance and stretch into a deciding set. Given the form and circumstances, the smart play is on Total Over.
