Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
In the past week, Aston Villa have been impressive, securing two high-scoring victories. Wolverhampton have also found the net, but unfortunately, they lost both of their matches. Will these trends continue?
Aston Villa
Aston Villa played their first-ever UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday, having last featured in the 1982/83 season's European Cup. Their debut was a resounding success: they thrashed Young Boys 3:0 away. They managed to score one more goal than expected (2.04 xG) while needing just seven shots on target. This marked the team second consecutive three-goal victory; last weekend, they put three past Everton, though they initially conceded two. Aston Villa’s fans have plenty to cheer about in terms of goal-scoring: 10 goals in 5 matches.
Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton also know how to score. They were involved in a shootout with Brighton midweek but ultimately lost (2:3). The scoreline reflects the effort: 13 (9) shots to 9 (5), with an xG of 1.21 to 0.87. Previously, they narrowly lost to Newcastle United by one goal, despite leading. A disastrous spell closer to the end saw them concede twice in five minutes. They are certainly an entertaining team to watch, but this doesn’t make life easier for their fans, as they currently languish near the bottom of the Premier League table. Turning things around against Aston Villa is not the most promising task.
Aston Villa vs Wolverhampton Prediction
This match is likely to see plenty of chances, especially at the visitors' goal. When Wolverhampton play, both teams tend to score. This has happened in four of their last five matches, with more than two goals scored in three of those five. Aston Villa have also been involved in four of their last five games where the total over 2.5 came through. The only exception was their match against Arsenal, but the goalkeeper made a miraculous save. This trend should continue.
