Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Spanish La Liga match.
At the start of the season, Atlético Madrid are still adjusting to their attacking line, which has been significantly boosted by the transfers of Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth. The Madrid side will face a tough challenge away at Athletic Bilbao, but they are rightly considered favourites, as the Basque side don't seem particularly threatening.
Athletic Bilbao
On Wednesday, Athletic Bilbao secured their first victory of the season, overcoming Valencia at home (1:0). They generated 1.52 xG against a crisis-stricken Valencia and managed to score only just before halftime, failing to fully capitalise on their massive advantage (13-2 on shots). Against a top-tier opponent, Bilbao will once again struggle to play on equal terms: with injured goalkeeper Unai Simon sidelined, the Basque side lose a crucial option for ball progression. This was evident in their loss to Barcelona (2:1).
Atlético Madrid
Despite two draws and a commanding win over Girona (3-0), Atlético Madrid sit third in La Liga in expected goals (6.45). Against Espanyol (0:0), they couldn't break down the opposition (3.59 xG), and their best chance fell to Rodrigo Riquelme, who failed to convert a penalty. On the other hand, against a solid Girona, Atlético deservedly took all three points—proving that their leaders step up in important matches.
Athletic Bilbao - Atlético Madrid Prediction
In April, Atlético Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao (3:1). Atlético Madrid have a stronger squad than the Basque side, so betting on them to at least not lose makes a zero-handicap odds very appealing.
