Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the La Liga match.
Athletic Bilbao have always been a formidable team, and their six-game unbeaten streak further underscores this. Real Madrid, their visitors, are recovering from a string of losses. The Madrid side have a fondness for San Mamés and often trouble the hosts. It’s possible that Real Madrid will once again take points from the Basques and close in on Barcelona.
Athletic Bilbao
Athletic Bilbao have avoided defeat in 10 of their last 11 matches, propelling themselves into the top four of La Liga. They are particularly strong at home, losing just once in eight games. At Nuevo San Mamés, Athletic Bilbao play cautiously—six of their eight matches saw fewer than 2.5 goals. However, meetings with Real Madrid are less promising, with no victories in the last 18 encounters.
Real Madrid
Following a humiliating 0:4 defeat to Barcelona, Real Madrid are gradually regaining form. The return of Thibaut Courtois from injury has been pivotal, as the Madrid side have kept clean sheets in their last three matches. While they remain unbeaten away, performances have been heavy-going, with the total staying under three goals in six matches. Nevertheless, Real Madrid have historically fared well at San Mamés, going nine matches without defeat there. Thanks to Athletic's solid defence, the total has consistently been under 3.5 goals.
Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid Prediction
Head-to-head fixtures between these teams are traditionally low-scoring. Athletic Bilbao defend superbly at home, posing challenges even for top clubs. Real Madrid also avoid an open game against such organised opponents. Moreover, with Kylian Mbappé not particularly impressive and Vinícius Junior sidelined due to injury, the visitors will have few opportunities to shine. At the same time, they are on an unbeaten run against Athletic Bilbao, and we believe it will continue.
