Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Water Polo World Championship match.
Australia impressed at last year’s Olympic Games, but their last World Championship podium finish dates back to 2019. Greece have not been consistent contenders at major tournaments, although they did manage to reach the semi-finals at the most recent edition of the World Aquatics Championships.
Australia (women)
Australia enter the knockout stages directly at the quarter-final stage. They topped their group with three wins — over Singapore (34:2), New Zealand (15:6), and Italy (19:15), the latter ranked among the world’s top ten. However, Australia have struggled against top-five ranked opponents in 2025, having lost all six of those encounters.
Greece (women)
Greece narrowly lost to the fourth-ranked Hungary in the group stage. They then secured dominant wins over Croatia (31:7) and Japan (25:15), both of whom sit outside the world’s top ten. In the round of 16, Greece cruised past France, 23:9, extending their winning streak over that opponent to 14 matches. Notably, in 2025, Greece have recorded victories over several top-six ranked sides, including Hungary (twice), the Netherlands, the United States, and Australia.
Australia (women) vs Greece (women) Prediction
While Australia hold a 9-5 advantage in head-to-head encounters, recent meetings have favoured Greece. The Greeks have avoided defeat in regulation time in seven of the last nine clashes and have only once lost by more than two goals in that span. We expect Greece to provide a stern challenge to the Olympic silver medallists and back them to cover a +2.5 handicap.
