Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Ligue 1 match.
Auxerre have failed to win in Ligue 1 for nine consecutive matches but are still managing to stay at a relatively safe distance from the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Olympique Marseille are essentially the only side attempting to chase down Paris Saint-Germain, who have built a 10-point lead at the top. However, they have also created a six-point cushion between themselves and the chasing pack.
Auxerre
Auxerre have not won a single match this winter. Their last victory came on 24 November against Angers at home (1:0). That said, this winless run includes commendable draws against Paris Saint-Germain (0:0) and Lille (0:0), both secured at their home ground. Of the nine-match winless streak, five took place at the Stade Abbé-Deschamps, and Auxerre did not lose a single one. Despite sitting 12th in the overall standings, they remain seventh in the home table.
Olympique Marseille
Marseille have been in excellent form this February, winning all three matches, including an Olympique derby victory over Lyon (3:2). Only one of those three games was played away from home—a 2:0 triumph over Angers. Interestingly, Angers are currently just one place above Auxerre in the table. Under Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille have won nine of their 11 away matches, with just two defeats. Their results suggest a clear trend—either they win or they lose, with no room for draws.
Auxerre vs Olympique Marseille Prediction
Auxerre might suffer their first home defeat since September, but if they do, it will likely be by the narrowest of margins. Their strong home form deserves recognition, as they have lost only once at the Stade Abbé-Deschamps this season—fewer than all but two teams in Ligue 1, one of them being Paris Saint-Germain.
