Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
One of the most compelling Champions League quarter-final ties is set to unfold on Tuesday as Bayern Munich host Inter Milan. The visitors will likely aim to avoid defeat in Munich, with Inter Milan potentially benefiting.
Bayern Munich
Since the season resumed, Bayern Munich have secured victories over St. Pauli (3:2) and Augsburg (3:1), both teams from the lower half of the Bundesliga standings, largely through sustained attacking pressure. However, such a strategy is unlikely to prove effective against Inter Milan. Without Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Dayot Upamecano, Bayern Munich are operating without several key defensive players. On Friday, Jamal Musiala also picked up an injury — in his absence, Harry Kane is expected to receive fewer opportunities in front of goal. Against Bayer Leverkusen (5:0 on aggregate), Bayern Munich produced a disciplined defensive performance, limiting their opponents to 1.78 xGA over 180 minutes. The team has shown it can prioritise defensive organisation when required.
Inter Milan
Inter Milan head into this crucial phase of the season in excellent form — the squad are unbeaten in their last 10 matches across all competitions. Last week, they recorded a 1:1 draw with AC Milan in the Coppa Italia and a 2:2 draw with Parma in Serie A, but Inter Milan managed to rotate the squad effectively. In the Champions League Round of 16 tie against Feyenoord Rotterdam (4:1 on aggregate), they conceded just 1.23 xGA from open play — their three-centre-back system offers strong control in central areas.
Bayern Munich vs Inter Milan Prediction
In the group stage of the 2022/23 Champions League, Bayern Munich defeated Inter Milan twice without conceding (both matches ending 2:0). The difference in quality between the sides remains marginal — Inter Milan are unlikely to take risks on the road, while Bayern Munich, currently lacking attacking cohesion, could find it difficult to progress the ball through midfield.
