Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Women’s EuroBasket match.
Belgium have been drawn into Group C, a section where no other team is realistically expected to challenge them for the top position. As one of the tournament front-runners, Belgium now have the luxury of treating their initial fixtures as high-quality preparation games. Their first test comes against Portugal.
Belgium (women)
Belgium have arrived at the tournament at full strength, ready to defend their EuroBasket crown. Recent warm-up results highlight just how well-prepared they are. The squad edged past France (63:60), and followed that up with two commanding victories over Germany (97:60 and 80:45). Both of those opponents represent a significantly higher standard than Portugal, which makes a 20- or even 30-point margin in this opening game entirely feasible.
Portugal (women)
Portugal don’t appear equipped to challenge any of the top-tier squads in their group. During a recent warm-up match against Switzerland, they managed just 59 points in an uninspired display. Much of the tactical burden rests on 37-year-old centre Lavinia da Silva — hardly a sustainable strategy when up against a powerhouse like Belgium.
Belgium (women) vs Portugal (women) Prediction
This fixture looks set to be one of the most lopsided encounters of the tournament’s opening round. The difference in class between the two sides is so stark that there is little need for deeper tactical analysis. A comprehensive win for the favourites is the most probable outcome.
