Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Wimbledon match.
Ben Shelton has made a strong start at Wimbledon, not dropping a single set across his opening three matches. He now faces Lorenzo Sonego once again, having already beaten the Italian in both of this season’s previous Grand Slam events — the Australian Open and Roland Garros. Shelton now has the opportunity to make it three in a row, this time on grass.
Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton’s recent form has been impressive: he has won seven of his last nine matches against players ranked outside the ATP top 20 and has conceded only two games on serve across three rounds. His composure in tie-breaks stands out — he has won all three he has played during this tournament. Against Márton Fucsovics, the American combined raw power with tactical awareness, delivering eight aces, avoiding any double faults, landing 81% of his first serves, and winning 22 out of 31 points at the net.
Lorenzo Sonego
By contrast, Lorenzo Sonego scraped through a grueling five-set battle against Brandon Nakashima, coming from a break down in the fifth set. Questions remain about his physical readiness after such a demanding match — it’s hard to see him fully recovered in time to take on such a powerful and energetic opponent. The head-to-head record also favours Ben Shelton (3-1). Notably, Sonego’s best result in 2025 to date has been a quarter-finals appearance, where he was eliminated by Ben Shelton.
Ben Shelton vs Lorenzo Sonego Prediction
Considering the American’s current momentum and Lorenzo Sonego’s fatigue, we expect Ben Shelton to win with a margin of at least four games.
