Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
On Wednesday, Ewood Park hosts a clash between neighbours in the league table. Both sides are level on points, nestled in the playoff zone in fifth and sixth place. West Bromwich Albion boast a stronger defence, but Blackburn Rovers excel in attack. Which will prevail?
Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn Rovers netted 12 goals in their first five matches (16 in total), but their form has deflated since, averaging less than a goal per game with two scoreless outings. Their defence remains shaky, resulting in recent defeats to lower-table sides Coventry City and Plymouth Argyle. However, it’s worth noting that these slips occurred away from home, where Blackburn Rovers traditionally struggle. They claimed victory against Swansea City in the last round, but after an early goal in the 13th minute, they surrendered control (0.54-1.14 xG) and held on until the final—a win that doesn’t quite inspire confidence.
West Bromwich Albion
West Bromwich Albion have also lost their way, and forward Josh Maja his accuracy, a key factor in their play. Unfortunately, there is no effective replacement. Daryl Dike is technically available, but since his €8.6 million transfer from Orlando City in January 2022, he has made just 32 appearances for the club due to ongoing injury woes. His recent history includes two Achilles surgeries, with his last appearance on the pitch back in February. His return date remains uncertain. A healthier option, Karlan Grant, who has scored twice, primarily plays on the left wing and hasn’t led the attack. If Josh Maja, who has scored seven of the club's 13 goals, fails to find the net, issues are likely to arise.
Blackburn Rovers vs West Bromwich Albion Prediction
In three of their last four encounters, the home side emerged victorious, with one draw. Considering West Bromwich Albion’s finishing problems and Blackburn Rovers' attacking potential, which remains intact, it’s wise to back a double chance in favour of the hosts.
