Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League Qualifying match.
An intriguing clash between Bodø/Glimt and Sturm Graz will decide who secures a place in the Champions League group stage. The Norwegians rely on Nikita Haikin as their undisputed No.1, while the Austrians have Daniil Khudyakov in their squad, though he will miss the first leg through injury.
Bodø/Glimt
Last season, Bodø/Glimt went all the way to the Europa League semi-finals, where they were stopped by eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur (1:5 on aggregate). Since then, they have focused on domestic matters, thrashing Strømsgodset away (5:0) on Friday to stay top of the table. They lead Viking only on goal difference (both on 42 points), but boast the best attack in Norway (49 goals). Since 12 July, Bodø/Glimt have scored 11 times in four home outings.
Sturm Graz
Sturm Graz have now finished ahead of long-time Austrian powerhouse Red Bull Salzburg for two straight seasons. In last year’s Champions League run they managed two wins, but their defence was shaky, conceding 14 goals in eight matches. Their Bundesliga start has also been uneven: a defeat to Rapid Wien (1:2) and even conceding against struggling Ried (3:1) point to ongoing issues at the back.
Bodø/Glimt vs Sturm Graz Prediction
Above the Arctic Circle, Bodø/Glimt have made a habit of getting results on the European stage. With home advantage and attacking momentum, the Norwegians look the stronger side to take the first leg.
