Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Bundesliga match.
A shaky start under Niko Kovač has left Borussia Dortmund stuck in mid-table. However, a commanding victory over Sporting (3:0 on aggregate) in the Champions League knockout round has lifted their spirits heading into the clash with Union Berlin.
Borussia Dortmund
Since parting ways with Nuri Şahin, Borussia Dortmund have suffered only two defeats in their last seven matches across all competitions. Despite setbacks against Stuttgart (1:2) and Bochum (0:2), they remain just seven points behind the top five—a position that could once again secure a Champions League spot for Bundesliga teams. Borussia Dortmund rank in the league’s top five for expected goals (xG 37.78) and have netted 25 goals in 11 home games—only four teams have scored more at home.
Union Berlin
The appointment of Steffen Baumgart has provided only a slight cushion between Union Berlin and the relegation zone. In their recent home defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach (1:2), the team collapsed early, conceding twice within the first 26 minutes and allowing 2.05 xGA. With Robert Skov injured, Union Berlin are set to start on-loan Borussia Dortmund midfielder Tom Rothe, which could leave them vulnerable at the back.
Borussia Dortmund vs Union Berlin Prediction
Borussia Dortmund will welcome back Julian Ryerson from suspension, meaning Niko Kovač has a near-full squad available, with Felix Nmecha being the only absentee. Union Berlin managed to break a three-match losing streak against Borussia Dortmund earlier this season (1:2), but they have never picked up points at Signal Iduna Park.
