Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Women's Copa América match.
The final round of the Women's Copa América group stage brings together two of the top-ranked CONMEBOL nations in the FIFA standings. Both are expected to progress from Group B.
Brazil (women)
Brazil have already booked their place in the knockout stage, sitting five points clear of third place. They have won all three of their matches thus far, with an impressive goal difference of +11. Breaking through their defence has proven to be a formidable challenge. It’s also worth remembering that the Brazilians are the reigning Copa América champions. Their early elimination from the 2023 World Cup, where the team failed to reach the knockout round, was one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
Colombia (women)
Colombia reached the final of the 2022 tournament, narrowly losing to Brazil after a penalty scored by Débora Cristiane de Oliveira. At present, they hold the same goal difference as Brazil at 12:1, though they were recently held to a goalless draw by Venezuela. That draw has cast some doubt over their semi-final hopes. A heavy loss to Brazil, combined with a convincing win for Venezuela over Paraguay, could see Colombia be eliminated from the knockout stage.
Brazil (women) vs Colombia (women) Prediction
We expect Colombia to retain their lead over the chasing pack. Although Brazil have won three of the last four meetings between the sides over the past three years, only one of those victories was by more than a single goal (3:1), and that came after Colombia were reduced to ten players. A narrow defeat would still be enough to see the nominal away team through, though they’ll be aiming for more.
