Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Women’s Volleyball World Championship match.
The tournament favourite Brazil begin their campaign in Chiang Mai against Greece. The South Americans arrive as 2022 World Championship runners-up with one of the deepest rosters in the field, while their opponents are making just their second appearance since 2002. With a neutral venue, home advantage is erased — the match will be decided by class, depth and efficiency on serve and reception.
Brazil (women)
Ze Roberto, one of the most decorated coaches in women’s volleyball, continues to lead the side. Brazil bring a reliable core: setters Macris Carneiro and Roberta Ratzke, opposites Rosamaria Montibeller and Kisy Nascimento, outside hitters Gabriela Guimarães and Ana Cristina, and middle blockers Julia Kudiess and Lorenne Teixeira. Ranked No.2 in the world, Brazil also finished runners-up in this summer’s Nations League. Their first tempo play and blocking give them a clear edge, while a stable reception line led by their outsides ensures balance across rotations.
Greece (women)
Greece, under Apostolos Oikonomou, enter as clear underdogs (No.30 in the world). Their roster is recognisable: setter Lamprini Konstantinidou, opposite Martha Anthouli, outside Olga Strantzali, and middle Georgia Lamprousi. A major blow is the absence of Anthi Vasilantonaki (knee injury in friendlies). At Euro 2023, Greece finished 19th. Their strengths lie in serving runs and defensive grit, but they struggle in reception under pressure and in finishing extended rallies against elite blocking.
Brazil (women) vs Greece (women) Prediction
The gulf in class and depth is considerable. Brazil are stronger in the middle, on serve, and in controlling rallies with their block. For Greece to stay competitive, perfect reception is required — but without Vasilantonaki their attacking options look limited. Brazil’s quality should tell, and a straight-sets victory is the likeliest outcome. One set could tighten if Greece catch fire from the service line, but over the match the South Americans’ superiority is overwhelming.
