Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the FA Cup match.
Brentford have a relatively simple opponent ahead. For Plymouth Argyle, the priority is currently to maintain their place in the Championship, and even a victory would only guarantee them an extra match in their schedule.
Brentford
Thomas Frank's team, despite four matches without a victory in the league, remains in the middle of the table but is increasingly distancing itself from the European competition spots. Therefore, a potential win in the FA Cup could open up a pathway to Europe. However, achieving this is easier said than done: since their return to cup competitions at the Championship level in 2013/14, Brentford has advanced past the fourth round only once, losing to Swansea (1:4) in the Round of 16 during the 2018/19 season.
Plymouth Argyle
The London side has had a tough couple of years. In their first FA Cup match, they faced Premier League clubs and were eliminated. The same story is unfolding now. Just before the 2025 match, Plymouth Argyle's management fired Wayne Rooney, whose high profile was not enough to save him. Kevin Nancekivell is currently managing the team, though they are seeking a permanent replacement. Under the interim manager, the Pilgrims have yet to lose (with two draws), but the home draw against Bristol City (2:2) was only salvaged in the 91st minute.
Brentford — Plymouth Argyle Prediction
Brentford clearly belongs to a different category. At home, they are a formidable team, sitting second in the Premier League's home table despite two recent defeats. In those losses, they faced the third-placed (Nottingham Forest 0:2) and the second-placed (Arsenal 1:3) teams in the league. The hosts are bound to win but are unlikely to exert excessive effort, especially with a match against a recovering Manchester City coming up on Tuesday.
