Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Volleyball Nations League match.
Bulgaria
Currently 17th in the world rankings, Bulgaria have won two of their first four matches but have struggled when facing stronger teams. They missed out on the play-offs last season and have shown little sign of progress since. The Bulgarians have lost seven of their last ten matches, including defeats to Italy (ranked 5th) and Poland (ranked 1st). They have also lost their last three matches against Japan, twice without winning a single set.
Japan
Ranked 4th in the world, Japan have made an impressive start, collecting nine points from four matches, including three straight-set wins. After reaching the final in last season’s Volleyball Nations League, the squad have maintained a strong level of play. The Japanese have won five of their last nine matches, with all four defeats coming against top-10 ranked sides: Italy, Poland, Germany, and the USA.
Bulgaria vs Japan Prediction
The difference in quality and form is clear. Japan have routinely handled lower-ranked opposition and are expected to record a fourth consecutive win over Bulgaria. A modest handicap on the favourite looks a sensible approach.
