Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
Seven months have passed since their last meeting, but now they face each other at Premier League level. Realistically, both Burnley and Sunderland are expected to be fighting for survival this season, which makes a win here vital even at such an early stage.
Sunderland
Sunderland already have an edge after their opening-day victory. And not just any victory: the team demolished West Ham United (3:0). All it took was a steady supply of crosses and someone, not even particularly tall, to attack them in the box. Their first goal of the season came from striker Eliezer Mayenda, before defender Daniel Ballard doubled the lead. Substitute Wilson Isidor then sealed the rout with a long-range strike.
Burnley
Burnley, meanwhile, faced Tottenham Hotspur, who actually finished below West Ham United last season in 17th. But Tottenham Hotspur are also the reigning Europa League winners and were minutes away from beating Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup (2:3 on penalties). Burnley were swept aside 0:3, with the decisive damage inflicted around the hour mark when Tottenham Hotspur struck twice. Burnley’s Championship success had been built on defensive resilience, but here the problem was not only the step up in opposition but also the loss of first-choice keeper James Trafford, sold to Manchester City.
Burnley vs Sunderland Prediction
Sunderland’s transfer campaign looks far more convincing. It has been smartly planned, and most of last season’s young core has remained. We’re confident the visitors can at least secure a draw.
